Fall Season is Flu Season

Don’t wait until you feel terrible…
As the temperatures begin to change and fall arrives, so does another familiar season — flu season.
Influenza can leave you feeling exhausted, achy, dehydrated, and completely run down. While there is no guaranteed way to avoid getting the flu, supporting your overall health, staying hydrated, getting adequate nutrition and following recommended flu-prevention measures can help prepare your body for the season ahead.
At RenIVate Mobile IV Therapy, our goal is to help you stay proactive about your wellness. IV hydration therapy can provide fluids and selected vitamins and nutrients directly into the bloodstream, making it an option for people looking for hydration and nutritional support during the busy fall and winter months.
Understanding the Different Types of Influenza
Influenza is caused by influenza viruses. There are four major types: Influenza A, B, C and D.
Influenza A commonly causes seasonal flu in humans and is also responsible for flu pandemics. Influenza A viruses are further classified by their surface proteins, including H and N proteins. Examples include A(H1N1) and A(H3N2).
Influenza B also causes seasonal flu and can produce significant illness. Influenza B viruses are not divided into H and N subtypes in the same way as influenza A.
Influenza C generally causes milder respiratory illness and is not a major cause of seasonal flu epidemics.Because circulating influenza viruses can change from season to season, the specific viruses causing the most infections can vary each year.
What Does the Flu Feel Like?
Unlike a common cold, influenza often comes on suddenly. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:
- Fever or feeling feverish and chilled
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle and body aches
- Headache
- Significant fatigue
- Weakness
- Occasionally vomiting or diarrhea, particularly in children
Dehydration can also become a concern, especially when fever, poor fluid intake, vomiting or diarrhea are present.
Where Does IV Therapy Fit In?
IV therapy does not cure influenza or replace medical treatment or vaccination. However, IV hydration can be used as supportive wellness care by delivering fluids directly into the bloodstream.
Depending on an individual’s needs and medical appropriateness, an IV may also contain nutrients such as Vitamin C, Zinc and Glutathione.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient with important roles in normal immune function. It also functions as an antioxidant and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
Maintaining adequate Vitamin C intake supports normal immune health. Vitamin C isn’t a guaranteed way to prevent influenza and shouldn’t be considered a treatment for the virus, but adequate nutritional status is an important part of supporting normal immune function.
Zinc
Zinc is another essential nutrient involved in immune-cell development and function.
The body does not maintain a large readily available zinc reserve, so adequate dietary intake is important. Zinc is frequently discussed in connection with respiratory infections, although evidence and recommended treatment differ depending on the specific infection.
For flu season, think of zinc as an immune-supporting nutrient, rather than a cure or guaranteed method of preventing influenza.
Glutathione
Glutathione is one of the body’s naturally produced antioxidants. It helps protect cells against oxidative stress and participates in several normal cellular processes.
Glutathione is sometimes included in wellness IV formulations for antioxidant support. Research continues into glutathione and immune health, but IV glutathione has not been established as a treatment or preventive therapy for influenza.
Don’t Forget Hydration
One of the simplest benefits of IV therapy is also one of the most important: hydration.
When you’re busy, traveling, exercising or simply not drinking enough, maintaining adequate hydration can be challenging. Illness can make it even harder.
IV fluids can provide rapid hydration, but anyone who is seriously ill, having difficulty breathing, unable to keep fluids down, experiencing chest pain, confusion, severe weakness or showing signs of significant dehydration should seek appropriate medical care rather than relying on a wellness IV.
Be Proactive This Flu Season
Supporting your health isn’t about waiting until you feel terrible.
Prioritize sleep, hydration, nutritious foods, regular activity when appropriate, hand hygiene and other recommended preventive measures. Annual influenza vaccination is also an important evidence-based tool for reducing the risk of influenza and its complications.
And when you’re looking for additional hydration and nutritional support, RenIVate makes wellness convenient by bringing IV therapy to you.
